We're always incrementally improving the shells of our DIY products, and these are the new LS1 and LS2 shells we're experimenting with, they adjust tiny dimensional parameters to make the light transmitting parts tighter, and for the LS1 we switched to very small round holes to absorb more light.
Since these are just a few improvements to the housing process, they won't be available immediately. We will gradually iterate the shell to the new version.
That's a fun interaction of letting things iterate, taking suggestions, and improving them.
Why are light sensors so fascinating to us? I think it's because light is everywhere and it shapes the world around us. While there are many low-power, commercially available sensors, I think it's a fun thing to do given the real-time readout of HA. It was an opportunity to pay homage to light.
